A Guide To Story Writing

STORY-WRITING-GUIDE


 

How to write a story?

1.Read the outline first.
2.Give a suitable title to the story.
3.Follow the points given in the outline. Do not omit any point or introduce an irrelevant one. 
4.Avoid digression and do not dwell too long on minor details.
5.Introduce dialogue, where necessary. Be very careful to make it lively and natural.
6.Add a moral if any, at the end of the story.

 

1. GRAPES ARE SOUR

 

Outlines: A hungry fox saw grapes hanging up-tempted to eat them-tried in vain to reach them-went away disappointed.

 

Story: One day a fox was very hungry. He wanted something to eat. Soon the fox came to a vineyard. It was full of grapes. The bunches of grapes were hanging down the vines. The fox was very happy to see them. But they were very high up from the ground. The fox stood upon his hind legs but could not reach them. Then he jumped up at them several times. Thus, the fox tried again and again but in vain. Soon he became very tired and disappointed. At last, the fox gave up all hopes and left the place. He said to himself, "I think the grapes are sour. So, I should not eat them.

Moral: The grapes are sour.

 

2. THE DOG AND HIS SHADOW

 

Outline: A dog crossed a bridge with a big piece of bone in mouth-saw his shadow in the water thought it to be another dog with a piece of bone tried to have it-the piece of bone in his mouth dropped into the water.

 

Story: One day a dog stole a piece of bone from a meat shop. He was running beside a stream taking it in his mouth. Then the dog came to a bridge over the stream. When he was crossing the bridge, the dog saw his own shadow in the water below. The foolish dog thought that it was another dog with another piece of bone in his mouth. He then became very greedy to get it. So he opened his mouth to bark. Then his own piece of bone dropped into the water below. It was taken away by the current of water. The dog left the place being very unhappy.

Moral: Greed brings ruin.

 

3.THE CROW AND THE PITCHER

 

Outlines: A thirsty crow found water in a pitcher -water was very low down-it picked up stones and threw into the pitcher-water rose-the crow easily drank water.

 

Story: On a very hot day a crow became very thirsty. It was flying here and there in search of water. But it found no water anywhere. At last, the crow found a pitcher in the distance and went there to drink water. But the water was at the bottom of the pitcher. The crow tried again and again to reach the water. But it failed to do that. Then the clever crow thought out a plan. It saw some pebbles nearby. He then dropped them one by one into the pitcher. As a result, the level of water rose very high. Then the crow drank water and satisfied its thirst.

 

Moral: Where there is will, there is a way.

 

4. THE WOLF AND THE CRANE

 

Outlines: A bone stuck in a wolf's throat-it asked a crane to pull it out-the crane was afraid the wolf promised a reward-the crane pulled the bone out-it asked for the reward-the wolf said, "Your reward is that I have not bitten off your head."

 

Story: One day a wolf was eating flesh. By chance, a bone stuck in his throat. He felt much pain. He tried his best to pull it out. But he could not do it. Then he asked many animals to help him. But nobody helped him. At last, he requested a crane to help him. He also promised to give the crane a reward. Then the crane agreed and pulled out the bone with its long beak. The wolf got great relief. Now the crane asked him for his reward. Then the wolf became very angry and said, "You are lucky that I haven't bitten your head off. This is your reward. Go away from here if you want to live. Then the crane went away without saying anything.

 

Moral: Never believe a rogue.

 

5. THE LION AND THE HARE

 

Outlines: A lion killed many beasts each day beasts held a meeting and decided to send one beast-a hare's turn came-it went up to the lion late-said another lion had stopped him on the way he took the angry lion to a well-saw his shadow-jumped into the well and died.

 

Story: A lion lived in a forest. He used to kill many beasts every day for his food. So, the animals in the forest were very much afraid. Then they held a meeting and decided that they would send a beast every day for the lion's meal. One of them went to the lion and told him about their decision. The lion agreed. One day a hare's turn came. The clever hare took a long time to reach the lion's den. When he reached there, the lion became very angry. Then the hare told him that another lion stopped him on the way. The lion became very angry. Then the hare took him to a well. There the lion found his own shadow in the water. He thought it to be another lion. Then he jumped into it and died.

 

Moral: Look before you leap.

 

6. A MAN AND HIS GOOSE

 

Outlines: A man's goose laid a golden egg daily-he sold them and became rich-he wanted to become richer still-he cut open the belly to get more eggs.

 Story: A man had a wonderful goose. It laid a golden egg for everybody in the morning. The man became very happy. One day, he sold the eggs in the market and became very rich. But he was very greedy. He was not satisfied with the only egg every day. He wanted to get more at a time. So, the foolish man decided to cut open the belly of the goose. He took a sharp knife one morning and cut open the belly of the goose. But he found no eggs inside the belly. The goose died. Then he became very sad and began crying bitterly.

 

Moral: Too much greed is bad. Or, Man wants more and loses all.

 

7. THE HARE AND THE TORTOISE

 

Outlines: A hare laughed at a tortoise slow pace they contested in a race-the hare was overconfident of his victory-slept on the way-the tortoise won the race.

 

Story: One day a hare met a tortoise and laughed at his slow pace. So, the tortoise was very much angry. Then he challenged the hare to run a race. The hare at once took the challenge. The race started one morning. The hare ran very quickly and went far ahead. The tortoise was sure about his win. So, he decided to sleep on the way. He lay down and soon was fast asleep. In the meantime, the tortoise did not stop at all and went near the goal. Now the hare woke up and ran very fast towards the goal. But the tortoise had already arrived at the goal.

 

Moral: Slow and steady wins the race.

 

8. THE CAT AND THE MICE

 

Outlines: A cat killed mice everyday-they lived in fear-they decided to bell the cat-nobody came forward-the plan fell through.

 

Story: Some mice lived in an old house. A cat also lived there. She killed many rats every day. The mice became very much frightened. They could not come out of their holes. So, they were about to die for want of food. Then they called a meeting to discuss the matter. At the meeting, one old mouse stood up and said, "I have thought out a plan." He told the mice to tie a bell to the cat's neck. The sound of the bell would act as an alarm. The bell would ring when the cat moved about. Then the mice would run away. Everybody welcomed the idea. But nobody came forward to bell the cat. So, the plan failed.

 

Moral: It is easy to say but hard to do.

 

9.THE OLD MAN AND HIS SONS

 

Outlines: An old farmer's sons quarreled -he asked each of them to break a bundle of sticks they failed -but they broke one stick at a time they learned the value of unity.

 

Story: An old farmer had three sons. They would quarrel among themselves. So, there was no peace in the farmer's family. He advised his sons not to quarrel but they did not listen to his advice. One day the farmer thought out a plan. He made a bundle of sticks and then asked each of his sons to break it. Each of them tried one by one but nobody could break it. Then the farmer untied the bundle and gave a single stick to each of them. Now the sons could break the single stick. Then the old farmer told them, "See the value of unity." If you are united nobody can do you any harm. Then the sons stopped quarreling and lived peacefully.

 

Moral: Unity is strength. Or, United we stand, divided we fall.

 

10. THE LION AND THE MOUSE

 

Outlines: A little mouse ran into a lion's nose the lion wanted to kill it-it begged his pardon and was free-one day the lion was caught in a trap the mouse came to his help.

 

Story: One day a lion was sleeping in his den. A little mouse was playing nearby and it by chance, entered the lion's nose. Then the lion woke up and caught the mouse. He wanted to kill it. Then the mouse begged his pardon. So, the lion set it free. One day the lion was caught in a farmer's net. He was roaring. Then the mouse came to his help and cut the net. The lion was set free. He became very happy and thanked the mouse.

 

Moral: Even the small one can be of great help to the powerful.

 

11. THE GOLDEN AXE

 

Outlines: A wood-cutter was cutting a tree by a river -his axe fell into the river -the river god told him to dive-he brought up three axes-the god become happy and gave him three axes:

 

Story: A wood-cutter was cutting a tree beside a river. Suddenly the axe fell into the river. So, he was crying bitterly. Then the river god came there. He said to him, "Why are you crying ?"Then he told him the reason. The river-god dived into the river and came up with a golden axe. Now the god said, "Is it your axe?" The man replied, "No it is not my axe." The river god again dived into the river and brought up a silver axe. He asked him if it was his axe. The wood-cutter answered that it was not his axe. The river god dived for the third time and came up with an iron axe. The wood-cutter now cried with joy and told him, "It is my axe." The river god became very pleased and gave him all the three axes for his honesty and truthfulness,

 

Moral: Honesty is the best policy.

 

12. THE FOX AND THE GOAT

 

Outlines: A fox fell into a well-a goat came to the well-she wanted to drink water-the fox told her to jump into the well-she jumped-the fox came out.

 

Story: On a very hot day, a fox became very thirsty. He came to a well to drink water. The level of water was very low down. He tried to reach it but fell into the well. He drank water as much as he could. Then the fox wanted to come out. But he failed. At that time a thirsty goat came there to drink water. She asked the fox, "Is the water good?" The clever fox said, "Yes, it is. You may come down to drink it." Then the goat said to the fox, "But how shall I get out ?" The fox told her, "I shall help you." Then the foolish goat jumped into the well. The clever fox quickly got on the back of the goat. Then he jumped out of the well.

 

Moral: Look before you leap.

 

13. THE TWO FOOLISH GOATS

 

Outlines: Two goats were passing over a narrow plank-there was little space-each one wanted to go first-they fought on the plank-fell down-they were drowned.

 

Story: There was a narrow plank over a small stream. One day a goat was passing over it. When he reached the middle then another goat came up to him. Both of them wanted to go first. But there was no space to pass side by side. Then one goat said to the other, "Go back, I shall pass over the plank first." The other goat said, "I won't go back. You must go back". Thus, they quarreled with each other and then began to fight with their horns. They forgot that they were on the plank. As a result, they fell down into the stream and were drowned.

 

Moral: Avoid quarrels and act wisely.

 

14. THE BOY AND THE WOLF

 

Outlines: A shepherd would cry, 'Wolf! Wolf ! for fun-the farmers in the field would come to help him-they became angry with him-one day a wolf really came he cried for help-nobody came-the wolf killed him.

 

Story: There was a shepherd. He tended sheep in a field. There was a forest near the field. The shepherd liked to cut jokes. One day he cried out, "Wolf! Wolf !" for making fun. At this, the farmers came to help him. But they found no wolf. The boy laughed at them. For a few days, he cried out in the same way. The farmers also came to help him. They became very angry with him. But one day a wolf really came. Then the boy cried, "Wolf! Wolf in fear. But nobody came to help him. So, the wolf killed him.

 

Moral: Nobody believes a liar.

 

15. THE BOYS AND THE FROGS

 

Outlines: Some frogs were swimming in a pond a few boys were playing beside it-they were throwing stones at the frogs-one of them told them not to throw stones.

 

Story: Some frogs were swimming in a pond. A few boys were throwing stones at the frogs. They were getting a lot of fun from their game. The stones hit the frogs. Whenever one of the frogs raised its head, the boys hit it with stones. Thus, the frogs were in great difficulty. Then one of the frogs leaped on a log and boldly said to the boys, "Why are you throwing stones at us ?" The boys answered, "We are doing this for fun." Then the frog said, "But what is a game to you is death to us."

 

Moral: One's sport may be death to others.

 

16. THE FOX WITHOUT A TAIL

 

Outlines: One day a fox's tail was caught in a trap-he lost his tail-other foxes laughed at him he went into the bush-he came out and told other foxes to cut off their tails-one fox asked how he had lost his tail.

 

Story: One day a fox's tail was caught in a trap. He tried hard to come out. To do so he lost his tail. Other foxes laughed at him. So he became very ashamed and went into the bush. There he hit upon a plan. Coming out of the bush he called a meeting. There he said, "The tail is an ugly and heavy thing. So, you all should cut it off. I am quite good and comfortable without it.' The foxes listened. Then an old fox stood up and said, "We know that you're happy without your tail. But, will you kindly tell us how you lost your tail." At this, the foxes began to laugh. The fox then became very ashamed and again hid himself in the bush.

Moral: Where there is the wiser, there is also the wisest.

 

17. THE ANT AND THE DOVE

 

Outlines: A dove saw an ant going down with the current-the dove dropped a dry leaf-the ant got on it and saved herself-a fowler aimed at the dove-the ant bit him-he missed the bird.

Story: A dove lived in a tree beside a river. One day he saw an ant was going down with the current. The life of the ant was in danger. Then the dove took pity on her and dropped a dry leaf on the water. The leaf was carried away by the current to the ant. Then she got on it and went to the shore. Thus, she was saved and lived with the dove in the same tree. One day a fowler came there and aimed at the bird. Then the grateful ant came to save the bird. She bit the fowler in the foot. He cried in pain. He lost his attention and missed the bird. The dove flew away and was saved.

 

Moral: One good tum deserves another.

 

18. THE WIND AND THE SUN

 

Outlines: The wind said he was stronger-the sun said he was stronger-a man was walking down a road, wearing his coat-the wind blow hard-he did not put off the coat-the sun shone brightly-the man put off the coat.

 

Story: One day the wind and the sun were quarreling. The wind said that he was stronger. The sun said that he was stronger than the wind. They wanted to prove who was stronger. At that time a man was walking down the road. He was wearing a coat. The wind said, "I will blow it off," The wind blew very hard. The man felt cold. So, he did not put off the coat. Then the sun shone very brightly. The man felt hot. So, he put off the coat. Now the wind said, "Yes, you are stronger than I." The sun said to the wind, "Don't be proud in the future."

 

Moral: Pride must have a fall.

 

19. THE OX AND THE FROG

 

Outlines: A young frog saw an ox-told his mother that he had seen a large animal-mother frog did not believe him-she thought she was bigger than the ox-she puffed herself and burst.

 

Story: One day a young frog saw an ox. It was grazing in the field. He became astonished to see the ox. He never saw such a big animal. He went home and told his mother, "Today I have seen a large animal." The mother frog said, "Is it as big as I ?" The young frog said, "The animal is much bigger than you." Then the mother frog puffed herself and said, "Is the animal bigger than I." The young frog said. "Yes, the animal is still much bigger than you." Then she again puffed herself and burst like a balloon,

 

Moral: Don't try to be what you cannot be.

 

20. KING SOLOMON'S WISDOM

 

Outlines: King Solomon was famous for his wisdom-the queen of Sheba wanted to test it - She gave two garlands of flowers: one real and the other artificial-two garlands looked alike-the king was puzzled-ordered to open the windows- bees flew to the real one-queen pleased.

 

Story: King Solomon was very famous for his wisdom. The queen of Sheba wanted to test it. So, she came to the king's palace. She brought with her two garlands of flowers-one real and the other artificial. They looked the same. She asked King Solomon to choose the garlands of real flowers. The king was puzzled. Then he ordered his servants to open the windows of the room. Bees sat on the garland of real flowers. Now the queen became very pleased with the king's wisdom.

 

21. THE SELFISH GIANT

 

Outlines: A giant-a beautiful garden-went a board-children played-came back home-he became angry-drove them out-made wall round the garden-children became sad-nature became angry with giant -spring did not come-long winter-the giant became surprised.

 

Story: A giant lived in a beautiful garden. Once he went to visit a foreign land, Then the local children used to play there. One day the giant came back. He became very angry to see the children playing there. He at once drove them out and made a high wall around the garden. The children became very sad at this. Nature also became very sad Spring left the garden. There was winter there forever. At this, the selfish giant became very unhappy and surprised.

 

22. LORD BUDDHA AND A MOTHER

 

Outlines: A woman's only son dead-came to Lord Buddha for his life-Buddha told her to bring same mustard seeds from a house where nobody died she went from door to door-found no such house-came to Buddha-he advised her.

 

Story: Once a woman lost her only son. At this, she cried much. At last, the woman went to Lord Buddha for help. He took great pity on the unfortunate woman. She said to Buddha, "O Lord, give life to my son." Buddha said, "Go and bring a handful of mustard seeds from a house where nobody has ever died." Then the woman went from door to door to bring the mustard seeds. But she found no such house. At last, she came back to Buddha and told him everything. Now Buddha advised her, "You see, death is common to all and so you should not weep." The unhappy woman was greatly consoled.

Moral: Death is common to all.

 

23. SIR PHILIP SIDNEY AND A WOUNDED SOLDIER

 

Outlines: Sir Philip Sidney wounded in the thigh in the battle-field-walked to his camp-became very thirsty-a glass of water given-gave it to another wounded soldier.

 

Story: Sir Philip Sidney was greatly wounded in his thigh on the battlefield by his enemy. There was nobody near to take care of him. He somehow went to his camp. He felt very thirsty and cried for some water. One of his soldiers gave him a glass of water. He was going to drink it. Then he saw another wounded soldier. He was also crying for water. Sir Sidney at once gave the glass of water to the injured soldier. He said, "Your need is greater than mine."

 

24. TWO FRIENDS AND A BEAR

 

Outlines: Two friends walking in a forest-they found a bear-one of them climbed up a tree - the other could not climb-he lay on the ground pretending to be dead-the bear came smelt him and left-the friend came down from the tree and enquired what the bear said-replied, "Don't trust a friend who leaves you in danger."

 

Story: One day two friends were walking in a forest. Suddenly they found a big bear coming up to them. At this, they became very afraid. One of them climbed up a tree immediately. The other could not climb up a tree. So, he lay on the ground and pretended that he was dead. The bear came up to him. It smelt different parts of his body and then left. Now the friend on the tree came down. He asked his friend what the bear had told him. Then he replied, "Don't trust a friend who leaves you in danger.

 

Moral: A friend in need is a friend indeed.

 

25. THE KING AND THE SPIDER

 

Outlines : Robert Bruce king of Scotland defeated six times-hid himself in a cave - saw a spider trying hard to reach the ceiling of the cave fell six times and then succeeded-king was encouraged-tried again to beat his enemies and succeeded.

 

Story: Robert Bruce, the king of Scotland was defeated six times in the battle. He left his kingdom and hid himself in a cave. There he saw a spider trying hard to reach the ceiling. He tried six times and each time he failed. But it did not give up hope. Then the spider tried and finally succeeded. The king of Scotland saw all these and said to himself, "If the spider can succeed, why can't I ?" Then he decided to fight once again. He collected an army to fight. This time he became successful on the seventh attempt.

 

Moral: Never give up hope.

 

26. THE FOX AND THE CROW

 

Outlines: A crow stole a piece of meat-a fox wanted to have it-praised the crow-she sang and lost her piece of meat.

 

Story: One day a crow stole a piece of meat. She then flew to a tree and sat on a branch of the tree to eat it. At that time, a fox was passing under the tree and saw the crow with the piece of meat. He became very greedy and wanted to have it. Then he played a trick. The fox began to praise the crow. He said to her, "How nice you are! How bright and beautiful your eyes and tail are! You are the most beautiful bird. But it's a pity that you can't sing at all." At this, the foolish crow was very much flattered. She then began to sing. The piece of meat dropped down and the clever fox ate it.

 

Moral: Don't believe a flatterer.

 

27. THE MONKEYS AND THE CAP-SELLER

 

Outlines: A cap-seller fell asleep under a tree a group of monkeys came down and wore the caps each the cap-seller woke up and saw them-threw his own cap on the ground-monkeys also imitated him.

 

Story: One day a cap-seller was carrying a bundle of caps to sell them in the market. Then he came to a huge tree and sat under its shade. The

cap-seller was wearing a cap. He then fell asleep out of tiredness. There were a group of monkeys in the tree. They came down the tree and wore the caps each. When the cap-seller woke up, he found his caps missing. He noticed that the monkeys were wearing the caps and making merry. Then the cap seller hit upon a plan to get back the caps. He knew that the monkey is fond of imitating. The cap-seller threw his own cap on the ground. The monkeys noticed it and they also threw their caps on the ground. Now the cap-seller collected them and went away.
