causes rainfall. The vapours go up into the air, get cool and big. Then they
come down in the form of rain drops. The sea is a big store house of riches and
valuables. Many stones and pearls are available on the sea bed. The sea is also
the home to many fishes and creatures. Lastly but no less importantly, travel
and transport are possible through the sea these days.

THE RAINBOW
A rainbow is wonderful
sight of nature. It is actually an arch of coloured light found across the sky.
We can have a rainbow only when it is raining and the sun is shining at the
same time. The sunlight gets reflected on the rain drops in the opposite end of
the sky and result is the creation of this terrific natural sight. The rainbow
is the combination of seven colours - violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow,
orange and red. In short it is called VIBGYOR. Each of the raindrops acts as a prism
splitting the sunlight into these colours. When the rain stops the rainbow
disappears. Poets like Wordsworth have written wonderful poems in praise of
this rare and phenomenal sight of nature.

DESERTS
A desert is a sea of
sands. It is a vast stretch of land full of sands, and rock. The sun shines
with its fury on the deserts. It is very hot and dry. There is little rainfall
there. The Thar in Rajasthan, the Arabian Desert and the Sahara are the well-known
deserts to us. Travelling through the desert is quite difficult and dangerous
as well. There are no roads across it. The camel is the only means of travel
and transport. The camel is hence called "the ship of the desert". It
is quite unsafe to walk and travel across the desert. So people go in companies
called caravans. There are places in the desert where there are springs of
water.

PRESENCE OF MIND
The presence of mind is
a great virtue. Very few people have this rare quality of the mind. Presence of

normally forget to do the right thing. Then we get terribly afraid and nervous.
We lose our cool brain and do not know what to do next. The people having the
presence of mind do the right kind of thing. They can control their nerves and
feelings. These people do the right kind of things and can get rid of the
problems and difficulties. Presence of mind is a god gifted quality and hence
very few people are endowed with this virtue.

sticks. The old man's sons who used to quarrel among themselves could not break
the bundle of sticks. But each of them could break the single stick easily. If
there is unity and understanding in a family, a village or a country, then the
family, village and the country can prosper. If there is the spirit of unity in

and peace, if we can work together.

quality in a man. Obedience means the habit of doing what one is told to do. It

listen to their elders and superiors, then they can never achieve anything in
their life. There will be chaos and disorder everywhere, Obedience is a virtue

people go inside their houses. Roads and fields become quite empty. A calm and
quiet atmosphere prevails everywhere. Travellers and passers-by take rest under
trees. However, the weather becomes cool towards afternoon and evening. Now
people come out. Birds chirp here and there in trees. Cattle come back home from
the field. Thus a hot summer day is not at all pleasant.

AN EXCITING CRICKET
MATCH
I
have seen many exciting cricket matches. Of these, the last Test Cricket Match
between England and India played at Kolkata was the most exciting to me. India
started badly in their first innings. But when India's captain Azharuddin came,
it was a different game. He played a superb innings of 182. Young Tendulkar
gave him a good support. His was a responsible innings. India made 371 in all.
Then England came in to bat. They were in great trouble. Indian spinners Raju,
Chauhan and Kumble bowled brilliantly. They scored only 163 and follow-on was
inflicted on them. In the second innings the England batsmen batted better and
scored 286. Gatting played well and made a good 81. Their lead was only of 78
runs. So the Indians scored these runs easily. This was a great win for the
Indians. I enjoyed every moment of the match at Eden Gardens. I can never
forget it.

strongly wish to become the captain of the Indian Cricket Team in future. In
recent years, India's performance is very poor. My primary duty as captain will
be to increase India's prestige in cricket. To do this, I will first pick up

THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A
COIN
I
am a very old coin. I was very bright when I was born in the mint. I came to a
gentleman's purse from the counter of a bank. But I was not there for a long
time. I was given to a poor cobbler. I was there in his box with many other
coins. But the cobbler loved me dearly for my beauty and brightness. I stayed
with him for a long time. But the poor man one day was forced to give me to a
shopkeeper to buy some rice. The cobbler became very unhappy. I was also very
sad. Then a customer dropped me on the road. I was there for a long time. At
last, a beggar saw me and became very happy. The hungry beggar soon gave me to
a shop to buy food. Thus, I am changing places and persons. I am now old. But I
have still my value.

THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A
STATION
My
name is Howrah Station. I am one of the biggest stations in India. I was born
many years ago when the country was under British rule. I was then very small.
But now I am very big and busy all the time from morning to mid-night.
Thousands of passengers use me every day. I have enquiry counters, telephone
booths, a big waiting room, canteens and security men to help the passengers.
There is a big crowd during office hours. Children often get lost in the crowd
and pick-pockets steal money. Thus, I am always busy and active.

and guide me. As a result, I became a vagabond. At this stage, a man came to
help me and promised to give me food. He took to a gang of thieves. They taught
me the art of stealing. I did not like at first. But I was forced to follow it.
One day I was caught red handed and beaten terribly. I was then imprisoned.
Since then, I have been living in prison. Thus, I have lost all hope in life. I
become very unhappy when I compare my present life with the past one.

animal and human flesh. Some even commit suicide. Wars, drought, floods are the
main causes for famine. The famine in 1776 is the worst ever famine in Indian

A VILLAGE PATHSALA
There
is a village pathsala in our village. It is situated in the middle of the
village. It is conducted by an old and learned teacher. He was a primary school
teacher. The pathsala sits twice a day-in the morning and in the evening. There
are twenty five students. They sit on the mat. There is strict discipline in
the pathsala. Students come in right time. They prepare their studies. The
teacher is very sincere in teaching. He loves the students dearly. They also
respect them very much. The village pathsala prepares the future scholars of
the society.

result, enteric breaks out. It claims many lives. People pray for rain.
Sometimes God grants their prayers. It rains with storm and thunder. It brings
temporary relief to all. But the rainy season gives a temporary relief.
155.
CHILDREN'S DAY
Every
year November 14 is celebrated as Children's Day in our country. This day is
the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India.
Pandit Nehru loved children very dearly. He used to mix with children like a
friend. They too loved him dearly. They called him 'Chacha Nehru'. On this
particular day various functions are held throughout the country. The children
enjoy the day very much. This is how they pay respect to Pandit Nehru.
156.
THE INDIAN FARMER
The
Indian farmer is one of the greatest friends of our society. He is poor but
noble. He leads a very simple life. He is very hardworking. He is busy from
dawn to dusk. The farmer wakes very early in the morning. He goes to the field
and works there till noon. He then comes back home, takes launch and rest. Then
he goes to the field again and works till sun-set. The farmer ploughs the field
and cultivates it. He works very hard to produce crops for us. Thus, the Indian
farmer is a true son of the soil.
157.
A SUMMER AFTERNOON
A
summer afternoon is a very unpleasant time. Nobody likes it for a very hot and
humid weather. The sun continues to shine with its scorching rays. For this
extremely hot weather streets and roads become deserted. Buses and trains get
less crowded. People stay inside houses. Men everywhere sweat badly. They feel
tired and thirsty. Birds and animals take shelter in and under trees for shade.
Sometimes a heat wave blows across. It is very dangerous. There are frequent
power cuts. This increases people's discomfort. There are occasional hail
storms now which bring temporary relief to the people.
158.
VILLAGE LIFE
Most
of the people of our country live in villages. The people here live in mud
houses. They are mostly poor and their main occupation is cultivation. The
village roads are unmetalled. They are very dusty in summer and winter but very
muddy in the rainy season. There are open fields, ponds, ditches and bushes
around the villages. There are tube wells, schools, post offices, clubs and
temples there. Besides cultivation, there are some small scale industries in
villages. Villagers live a hard life. There are no good doctors and they have
to walk a long distance to reach towns and cities. But they are fortunate
because they get fresh food and fine atmosphere to live in.
159.
MY VILLAGE
The
name of my village is Palasdanga. It is situated under the Jhargram
sub-division in the district of Midnapore. It is very big village. There are
about one hundred families here. Most of them are poor farmers. There are a few
service-holders from the village. There are big fields around the village. The
river Kangsabati flows very near it. There is a primary school, a high school,
a post office, a temple, a club in our village. There is a big pond in the
middle of it. Our village has many problems. The roads are unmetalled and
narrow. The nearest bus-stop is 10 km. away. There is no hospital near-by. In
my future life, I will try to remove these problems.
160.
MY TOWN
The
name of my town is Digha. It is located in the southernmost part of the
Midnapore district. It is a beautiful sea resort beside the Bay of Bengal. Late
Dr. B. C. Roy, the second Chief Minister of West Bengal was the maker of this
beautiful town. There are Old Digha and New Digha now. About twenty thousand
people live here in this small sea town now. It is a developing town. Proper
urban amenities are not yet present now. There are a few schools and a
hospital, markets, many shops, hotels and lodges here. But the greatest
attraction of the place is the beautiful sea and broad sea-beach. It is one of
the finest sea-beaches of the country. Many tourists come everyday to visit the
town. I am really proud of it.
161.
A RAINY DAY
A
rainy day is a great experience. It is really a very rare happening. Such a day
came last Friday. The sky was very cloudy since morning. There were frequent
flashes of lightning. Thunders were roaring every now and then. There was
deterioration in the condition of weather as the day went on. It started
raining around 9 O'clock. It was raining cats and dogs. My parents could not
think of sending me to school. This made me really very happy. I stayed at home
and enjoyed the beauty of rain outside through the window. My mother made
hodge-podge, an ideal food for a rainy weather. We listened to Tagore's songs
on the rains on the tape-recorder. It seemed that there would be no stop of
rain. The roads, parks and ponds went under water. Buses and other vehicles
stopped running on the roads. However there was much improvement in the weather
towards the evening. Then local children were found floating paper boats. Some
were walking through the water. Thus, I enjoyed the rainy day very much.
162.
THE PUJA VACATION
The
Puja vacation is the most attractive of all the holidays to Bengali students.
They wait the whole year for this vacation. This vacation is of about one
month's duration. It starts from before or after the Mahalaya and continues
till after the Kalipuja. The four-day Durga Puja festival is the greatest
attraction of the vacation. In the fine autumn weather, Bengali children and
youths enjoy it greatly. They go round the puja pandals wearing new and nice
dresses. After the Durga Puja comes the Lakshmi Puja, Kali Puja, Diwali etc.
one by one. Bengali students make much merriment during these festivals. Once
these are over, they start waiting for them to come in the next year.
163.
STUDENT LIFE
Student
life is the most important part of a man. It is the time when the student
should prepare himself for future. The student has many things to do now. Study
is the most important duty of the student. Now he should know a lot of things.
Character building is very important for him. Without it he can never shine in
life. He should obey his teachers and parents. They are his best guides in
life. Student life is also the time for building one's body. For success in any
field of life, good health is very essential. The student should do all these
things. Then only he can become a true citizen of the country.
164.
PERSEVERANCE
Perseverance
means to try again and again to achieve something. It is a great virtue. It has
made man the best of the living beings. To do something, we may fail. But for
this, we should not become hopeless. We should rather try harder, try again and
again. If we can do this, success must come. We all know the story of the Scottish
King who failed in the battle-field. But he finally became successful because
he tried again and again to win. We all should, therefore, practice
perseverance in life.
165.
TOLERANCE
Tolerance
is a great virtue. It means to bear or endure something without protesting. It
helps us overcome many problems and difficulties in life. Without it, nobody
can survive on earth. We have many problems to solve patiently. We have to be
calm and cool in solving these. Great men of the world have always been very
patient and tolerant. The earth itself is a classic example of this great
virtue. The world is now facing many serious problems. There may be more wars
in future unless the nations are tolerant to each other. We always should
remember that they only survive who endure. Absence of tolerance means death
and destruction.
166.
HONESTY
There
goes well-known proverb: "Honesty is the best policy". Honesty means
telling the truth; not cheating or stealing. It is one of the greatest virtues
of man. For a happy and peaceful living honesty is must. Men depend on each
other in their day-to-day life. One believes another and vice versa. This way
man can live in society. But there would be complete chaos and disorder if
there is cheating, stealing and telling lies. Then there would be
misunderstanding, quarrels and fights among the people in society. Man would be
then as selfish as the animal itself. That is never desirable. Therefore, there
can be no alternative to honesty.
167.
TRUTHFULNESS
Truthfulness
means to tell the truth. It is a divine quality in man. Everybody believes a
truthful person. He is loved by all. He can prosper in life. Truthfulness makes
our life pure and happy. Great men like Yudhisthir, Buddha and Gandhi are
famous for their truthfulness. For this, they still are immortal. But in our
society, most of the people are not truthful. For this, there is little peace
and happiness in society. Student life is the best time for cultivating
truthfulness.
168.
DISCIPLINE
Discipline
means to obey certain rules. It is very necessary in our life. Without
discipline nobody can succeed in life. There is discipline everywhere. The
stars and planets in the universe are following certain rules. There is
discipline in playgrounds, in roads, in schools and colleges. If players do not
follow rules in the playground, no game is possible. Accidents would occur if
traffic rules are not followed. No learning and teaching will be possible if
there is no discipline at schools and colleges. A student can never succeed if
he is not disciplined. A player cannot be a good player, if his life is not
disciplined. Thus, we find that discipline is very essential in our life.
169.
CLEANLINESS
There
is a good English proverb "Cleanliness is next to godliness." We
should keep our surroundings neat and clean. Then there can be no spread of
diseases. We should also keep ourselves neat and clean. We should clean our
rooms and houses every day. Cleaning our hands and faces, our dresses etc. are
part of cleanliness. We should bath every day. Without cleanliness there can be
no good health. It has also a good impact on our minds. Thus cleanliness is a
good virtue. One should develop this when one is young.
170.
TRAVELLING
Travelling
is a part of education. In ancient times, too, people travelled distant and
unknown lands. Fa Hien or Huen Tsang's travelling in India is a great example.
Travelling helps man know the unknown and see the unseen. The traveller can
learn the customs and manners, languages and landscapes of different places.
Travelling thus broadens his mind. It gives him much pleasure. Travelling has,
these days, (now-a-days) become much more comfortable than before. Buses and
trains, ships and airplanes have made travelling very easy and quick. Students
should travel new places because it is educative and entertaining.
171.
THE VALUE OF TIME
Time
is very important to the student and to everybody. A student can succeed if he
can best utilize his time. If he cannot do that, he will fail. The famous
persons down the ages became famous because they made the best use of their
time. The student should, therefore, be very careful about time. He should
never waste time unnecessarily. If he wastes his time, he must repent for this
in future. The student should make a daily routine and try to follow it
regularly. The student should always remember the well-known proverb:
"Time and tide wait for none."
172.
STUDENTS' DUTIES TO
THEIR TEACHERS
Students
have a lot of duties to their teachers. Their most important duty is to respect
their teachers. Students should obey them and their advice. Without respect for
and obedience to teachers, students can never acquire knowledge. They must
listen to teachers in the class very attentively. They should not make any
noise in the class in front of the teacher, Students should do the homework given
by the teachers. They should also ask the teacher questions in and out of the
class, Students should not protest against the punishment given by the teacher.
They should know that the punishment is given only for their good.
173.
THE SCENE IN
EXAMINATION HALL
The
scene in an examination hall is a grave one, It is a very silent and serious
place. Just before the start of the exam. examinees are in great tension. Some
become happy and others unhappy. When questions are distributed they start
writing answers. They are very attentive in their duty in the hall. The
invigilator goes from one end of the hall to the other. He is very vigilant in
his duty. He maintains discipline in the examination hall. When the dying
minutes of the exam, come, the tension increases. Everybody tries to finish his
writing. When the final bell goes, the invigilator collects the scripts. Then
some examinees are found unwilling to hand over their scripts.
174.
SOCIAL SERVICE
Social
service means service to the society, India is a poor country. The Government
is trying its best to improve the condition of the country. But it is not
possible for the Government to do that alone. Therefore, the help of others is
necessary. Students can do much in this regard. They can teach the illiterate
on Sundays and other holidays. During floods and famines they, can help the
affected people. They give them food, clothes and medicines. They can arrange
health seminars and exhibitions to make the people conscious about diseases.
Students have thus, really a lot to do for their country and countrymen.

179.
My Grandmother
My grandmother is an
old woman. She is slim and short. She wears glasses and is always dressed in a
spotless white saree. Since I have working parents, most of my time is spent in
my grandmother’s company (সঙ্গ). She loves me a lot and I respect her
very much. I am also greatly attached to her. Early in the morning she wakes me
up and helps me to get ready for school. We eat our lunch together after I
return from school. She is very kind and generous towards animals, birds and
poor people. She is very religious and tells the beads (জপমালা) of
her rosary (জপমালা) several times during the day. She is
always praying for the peace and prosperity of our family.
180. My Favourite Cartoon Character
My favourite cartoon
character is Chhota Bheem from the hit series on Pogo channel. Bheem lives in
Dholakpur, which is ruled by King Indraverma. The King loves Bheem for his
brave acts. Bheem protects the kingdom from evil people like Keechak, Kirmada,
and Mangal Singh. He always fights for justice and is not afraid of any
challenge. I like Bheem because he is very strong and fearless. Bheem has
several friends like Chutki, Jaggu, Raju, and Kalia. They all have several
adventures together. Bheem is very helpful to all the people of his kingdom and
also the neighboring kingdoms. He loves to eat laddoos, especially the ones
made by Tun Tun aunty. He has a great appetite for laddoos. I would like to be
strong and powerful like Bheem when I grow up. I would also like to use my
strength to fight for justice and defeat evil just like my favourite Chhota
Bheem.
181. My Favourite Toy
I have a lot of toys to
play with but my favourite toy is my “Teddy Bear”. I love to cuddle him. He is
a bundle of soft, white fur. I call my teddy “Cookie”. One of the reasons why I
love him so much is that I built “Cookie” myself at a “build-a-bear-workshop”.
I Chose the white fur and stuffed it with soft cotton wool. Then I put a little
red, plastic heart inside my teddy. I chose a pair of blue shorts and a pink
T-Shirt to dress my teddy. Then I gave him a name and brought him home. Every
Night I sleep with my teddy. He even giggles when I press his tummy. My mother
made some other clothes for him. He even has a pair of shoes, a hairbrush, and
a toothbrush. I take good care of him. I carry him with me when I go for a
picnic or for shopping. I will never part with my teddy even when I grow up.
182. A Night at a friend’s Place
It was Saturday night
when my father dropped me at Rita’s House. I was very excited as it was the
first time that I was going to spend a night at a friend’s place. Rita greeted
me warmly and introduced me to everyone in his family. After an early dinner,
we went to Rita’s Room. We changed into our nightwear and lay down on the bed
to watch our favourite movie. Thereafter we played some board games, chatted
and giggled for quite some time. After a while I dozed off. Suddenly I was woken
up by Rita in the middle of the night. I sat up in bed and was surprised to
find a chocolate cake, chips, and juice in a tray! “Let’s have a midnight
feast,” whispered Rita. We finished up every bit on the tray as we hadn’t eaten
well at dinner. Sleep deserted our eyes and we stayed awake talking and
laughing softly through the night.
183.
A Visit to a Dentist
Like most children, I
am very scared of going to a dentist. Last week, when my mother asked me to get
ready for a dental check-up, I was almost in tears. I tried to convince her
that my teeth were healthy and I was brushing them well twice a day. She just
smiled and took me along to the clinic. As I sat in the high chair and was
asked to open my mouth wide, I felt sure the dentist was going to pull out a
tooth! I held my breath and opened my mouth wide. The dentist tapped my teeth,
sprayed some water and cleaned them. He then smiled at me and said that my
teeth were perfectly healthy. What a relief I felt when I got off the chair and
came out of his clinic! I then realized that dentists are no monsters who pull
out teeth for fun.
184. Imagine you become invisible for a day. You can do
anything, go anywhere, and eat anything without anyone looking at you. Write a
paragraph on how you will spend your day as an invisible person.
I would be extremely
happy and make all my dreams come true. If I were invisible I would do such
things I can’t do when I am visible. Being invisible, I would have to the liberty
to go anywhere. I would be able to see everything without anyone knows. Being
invisible would give me all the perfect chance. I would walk unnoticed with the
great dignitaries of my country. I would visit famous places and see all the
wonders of the world. I would travel far and wide without paying a single
penny. I would get rid of the humdrum of life and enjoy roaming around like a
free, delighted bird. If I would invisible I would help people and society. I
would even strike my enemies to a position of definite advantage over them. I
would sneak into the enemy camps with time bombs and destroy their arms dumps.
Then I would disclose my identity and honored by my nation.
185. You have studied about the importance of conserving
the natural resources of the Earth. Write a paragraph about how you plan to
conserve a resource of your choice.
Natural resources refer
to substances being available to us by nature for economic gain. Air, water,
land, sunlight, minerals, plants, and animals are examples of natural
resources. Conservation of natural resources means the preservation of forests,
land, water bodies, minerals, fuels, natural gases, etc. Life would not be
imaginable without air, water, sunlight as well as other natural resources
present on the earth. It is our responsibility to conserve natural resources so
that they can be used for a longer period. Paper manufacturing depends only on
trees. Limiting our usage of paper will save a lot of trees. Electricity
generation requires a lot of coal. Switching to energy-saving LED bulbs and
using a roof-top solar power system will reduce pollution as well as conserve
coal. By not cutting trees and not wasting water, by planting more and more
trees, by following the three R’s-- reduce, reuse, recycle -- we can conserve
natural resources.
186. Write a paragraph about your favourite book. Give
information about what you like about it and why your friend should read it.
Everyone should read
books because “they are our friends in loneliness.” Good books can improve
one’s character. Books are a great source of knowledge for us. They are written
on various subjects. I am also fond of reading books. My favorite book is
“Khirer Putul”. It is written by Abanindranath Tagore. Khirer Putul is a simple
and touching tale about the sugar doll, the fate of Duorani and a tricky and
extraordinary monkey. The king of Deepnagar had two queens Suo Rani and Duo
Rani. The king gave Suo Rani 7 palaces, 700 female slaves, and best ornaments
from 7 kingdoms, 7 gardens, and 7 chariots. He neglected Duo Rani and gave her
a broken home, a deaf and dumb maid, torn clothes and dirty bed. I like this
book very much. I think that every child should read this book and gain some
moral values. It is written in a simple but effective style. It is worth
reading.
187. You have been chosen to present a ‘magic show’ for the
pre-primary children. Write a paragraph
about what tricks you plan to show and what you want to say during your show.
Everyone
enjoys magic shows. Last Saturday, I had a chance to perform a magic show at
the annual function of our school. I waited eagerly for my first presentation.
I dress up in colorful clothes for the show. The curtains on the stage lifted
slowly and I found myself standing in front of the audience. I introduced
myself and started my show. I performed the ticks of bending a pencil and
spoon-like rubber, an illusion of a magnetic pencil and a disappearing coin.
Before ending I tell the audience that in ancient India Queen Bhanumati has a
great passion for Magic. She was a self-made skilled magician. Queen Bhanumati
used to play a lot of her magic to King Vikramaditya. There comes the name
‘Bhanumati’s Khel’. It was fifteen minutes show. Everyone praised and admired
me. It would be nice to be a famous magician when I grow up.
