Chapter 1. How does a Computer Work
Ø A Computer is an electronic machine that can do fast
and correct calculations in addition to many other works.
Ø The word “computer” comes from a Greek Word “compute”
which means to calculate.
Ø Computer works on the principle of input, process and
output.
Ø Input is typing data into the computer.
Ø Process is calculating or sorting the data.
Ø Output is the result of processed data.
Ø Data is raw facts or figures.
Ø Information is processed data

Differences between man and computer
1.
Man works slowly
but computer works fast.
2.
Man can imagine
and think but computer cannot imagine and think.
3.
Man gets tired
and bored of doing the same work after some time but a computer doesn’t get
tired and bored of doing the same work even after a long period of time.
4.
Man cannot do
different types of work at the same time but computer can do different types of
work at the same time.
5.
Man do sometimes
wrong but computer always does accurately.
6.
Man can remember
limited information but computer can store lots of information.
Chapter 2. Characteristics
of a computer
Characteristics of a computer are
1.
Speed
2.
High storage
capacity
3.
Versatility
4.
Accuracy
5.
Diligence
Limitations of a computer are
1.
A computer cannot
take its own decisions and provide itself with input.
2.
It cannot detect
wrong input given by the user and thus gives wrong result
Therefore limitation of
computer is that it can work only with the help of human beings.
Computers are used for
1.
Problem-solving
2.
Playing games
3.
Arts &
entertainment
4.
Internet
5.
Documentation
6.
Accounting
7.
Scheduler
Versatility means
being able to do many different functions or activities.
Diligence Working
continuously without getting tired.
Chapter 3. Input and Output Devices
Input Devices
are used to enter the data into a computer.
Examples of Input devices
are:
*Keyboard *Mouse *Joystick *Trackball *Touchscreen
*Touchpad
*Microphone *Scanner
*Barcode Reader *Light Pen
Output Devices
are used to see the result on the computer screen.
Examples of Output devices
are:
*Monitor * Printer *Speaker
Storage Devices
are used to store data and information.
Examples of Storage
devices are:
*Hard Disk *Compact Disk *Pen Drive
Mouse is a
pointing device used to select objects or texts and to draw pictures on the
computer. Mouse is moved over a flat surface,
usually a mouse pad.
Joystick is
a pointing device .It is mainly used to play games on a computer.
A Trackball
looks like an upside –down mouse. The trackball remains stationery. It has a
ball that rotated to move the cursor on the screen.
Touch Screen allows
the user to enter input by simply touching the display screen. Touch screen is
used in Mobile Phones and ATMs
The touchPad is
commonly used in laptops.
Scanner is
an input device that reads and scans the text and pictures given on a paper into
computer understandable text and pictures. There are two types of scanners: Flat Bed scanner and Hand-held scanner.
A Barcode Reader is used to read barcodes printed on items in a shop, meant for sale.
A Light Pen is
a pen-shaped pointing device. It is connected to the monitor.Light Pens are
used to draw pictures on the screen. We can also select objects on the screen
by pointing at them with a pen. It is mostly used by engineers and designers. Light
pen is especially used by commenters of cricket matches to mark on screen what
they want to show.
Although printer is an
output device, it works like “Input-Process-Output”
itself .The blank Paper is the input, printing on paper inside is
processing and hard copy is the output.
CPU is the
processing device of the computer. CPU consists of three parts
·
ALU
(Arithmetic and Logic Unit): It does all calculations like additions,
subtractions, etc.
·
CU (Control Unit): It controls all the
activities of the computer .It Tells other parts of the computer what they
should do.
·
MU (Memory
Unit): It stores data and information temporarily.

take printouts of your drawing on a paper.
You can easily set your
picture as a desktop background.
You can choose more colors
from the edit colors command present in colors group.
